The mission of the Carolina Lettering Arts Society is to promote the study, practice, and appreciation of calligraphy, lettering and the book arts. We also work to encourage excellence in lettering and writing. We seek to foster a wider appreciation and deeper understanding of the history, traditions and applications of our art form.
CLAS includes all levels of calligraphers, lettering artists, bookbinders, printers and sign-writers, as well as those who simply have an abiding interest in the historical and/or contemporary applications of these forms of expression. We are teachers, artists, skilled amateurs, professionals and dabblers.
CLAS is a not-for-profit corporation founded in 1979. Although our membership is mainly within North and South Carolina, we welcome members from other states. We strive to provide a means of communication and exchange of ideas between and among our members and local guilds in the Carolinas.
Our Annual General Meeting (AGM), held each spring, is a weekend event, which consists of educational workshops, a business meeting, fellowship, and good food.
